ABOUT
A non - fiction illustrated book project exploring the theme of weather in the ancient world. Each spread of the book depicts a different weather phenomena and the way it was portrayed in ancient cultures and mythologies. For example, in irish mythology, the god of the seas "Mannanan" wore a cloak of fog which he used to hide the Isles of Man from the outside world. Another example is the canaanian god of weather "Habaal" which is said to ride clouds up in the sky.
DESIGN
For the visual development of the project I conducted an extensive research, exploring the different ways in which certain gods were depicted in their respective cultures. From ancient sculptures and paintings to verbal descriptions of them found in texts and stories. For the color approach I was aiming for different vibrant pallets for each spread so that the reader is surprised with each turn of the page. The style was inspired two main sources. The first is the traiditional water color creature painting style found on the "Spiderwick creature guide", it itself being inspired by documentry style wildlife paintings. The second is the simplified modernist style of the kung fu panda concept art which uses simple shape designs with cinematic moody color pallets and brush like texture to it's different shapes.
